Why and How to Discuss Decolonisation in the Czech Republic?
Teaching, writing and talking about history and the political and cultural present through a decolonial lens is becoming a hot issue in the Czech Republic. On the one hand, postcolonial theory and the demands of decolonisation are being appropriated by the up-and-coming generations of students, artists and members of the academic community; on the other hand, for many, it remains synonymous with a foreign cultural concept, unnecessary or unknown in the Czech Republic. What good can it do to talk about decolonisation in the Czech context? And what can the current debate and our ideas about decolonisation tell us about Czech society? The programme combines a presentation of research on the public reception of the decolonisation agenda in the Czech Republic with a moderated panel debate and is produced in collaboration with the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
